Rocky Mountain National ParkVacation in the RockiesRocky Mountain National Park is a spectacular wilderness that has been protected for millions to see and enjoy every year. It is a national park to be experienced, and one of only a handful that is maintained in as near a totally natural state as possible. Nearly one-third of Rocky Mountain National Park is alpine tundra. Forests stop and tundra begins where the average temperature of the warmest month is about 49 degrees Fahrenheit. In Colorado this occurs at between 11,000 and 11,500 feet above sea level. Two roads in the park lead you into the “land above the trees.” Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved highway in America, topping out at 12,183 feet above sea level (that's altitude!). With over 350 miles of trails, the park offers a vast array of choices. Wild animals in the park include elk, deer, bears, mountain lions, rocky mountain big horn sheep and an array of small animals and birds. Rocky Mountain National Park official website; http://www.nps.gov/romo/ provides the most current information about programs, offerings and information about the park.
